Petrified Forest

Saturday was a more relaxed day. We wanted to get closer to the Grand Canyon and Antelope Canyon and decided to visit Petrified Forest National Park on the way. The name is a bit misleading... Instead of a forest, the park mainly consists of badlands and desert views, with now and then a petrified tree trunk. In the beginning, we didn’t see any fossils, so we were quite disappointed. The first interesting stop would be a location with many petroglyphs called Newspaper Rock. Yet again, we didn’t see anything… At the end of the park, we finally got to see heaps of petrified trees, on locations like Jasper Forest, Blue Mesa and Rainbow Forest. However, the high expectations accompanying the name ‘Petrified Forest’ were really not met =(.

After this disappointing experience, we drove to Flagstaff, which would be our departure area for Antelope Canyon. To our surprise, the city was totally covered in snow. It felt more like driving through Scandinavia, than driving through central Arizona… Some snow storms have passed this area, but only the central plains of Arizona and the rim of the Grand Canyon seem to have been affected though. Just our luck! First we feared we would have to cancel our two-day hike through the Grand Canyon. Lucky for us, the freezing and the snow are just temporary! From Wednesday onwards, it would be 15 to 20°C again. Weird climate.
