Today we would get our long-expected surfing lessons! Before our lesson, we explored the beach side of San Diego. It’s really beautiful there, but very un-American. Streets are narrow, houses are small and painted in soft, happy colors and everyone is carrying a surfboard. The only indication that we were in the US, was that lanes for pedestrians and bicycles also had signs saying stuff like ‘slow traffic keep right’.
Our surfing initiation started off with some basics on the beach: how to use your board, how to avoid big waves, blabla. The start in the water was a bit rough. The water was icy – in winter? Really? And it is difficult in the beginning to find your balance. If it is only a little bit off, you’re going down… But after an hour or so, we finally started to ‘catch some waves’. By that time, we could go on our own, but peddling and pushing yourself on your board is so tiring that at the end Ann had troubles even taking the wetsuit off.
