We were visiting Bryce Canyon today, and as we read about the famous sunrise viewpoint in the park, we decided to also camp out there. This time we were smart and bought our wood on the way over. At Bryce Canyon we saw the different viewpoints: Yovimpa, Rainbow, Black Birch, Ponderosa, Agua, Natural Bridge, Farview, and Paria. Those were all quite similar, showing the pink cliffs (the word Canyon is not used correctly in this park) and different hoodoos. We also had hoped to see prairie dogs, for which the park is known, but we didn't – sad face.
The viewpoints that were truly worth it were Bryce Point, Inspiration Point and Sunset Point, all viewpoints surrounding the Bryce Amphitheater, a magnificent panorama of hundreds (or thousands) of hoodoos.
At Sunset Point, we did part of the Navajo Loop Trail, we would have gone around to finish the entire trail, but somewhere in the first half, it began to SNOW! And since weather in canyons is totally unpredictable, and we didn't want to get stuck in a snowstorm while being at the bottom of a canyon, we hurried our way back again. Strangely heaps of other tourists didn't share this concern with us and kept going down the trail. Crazy people.
We went to the Visitor Center to check the forecast for the night, since we also didn't want to spend the night camping in the middle of a blizzard. But 'lucky' for us, the sky would open up soon and would stay open the entire night. Which of course meant cold! Cold we could handle (with our new fancy thermal leggings and stuff) but what we could not handle was the freaking stormy wind that accompanied it. Rarely in our life have we been this cold... We went to sleep around 20h just to get inside the sleeping bags (we were out of wood, stupid wind). It appears that Ann's sleeping bag (+ thermal underwear + extra blankies at the feet) can manage temperatures down to -10°C. What a relief. Unfortunately for Kevin, the extra thermal stuff didn't keep the cold out enough, but brave as he is, he managed =).
