We took another scenic road: this time trough Boise National Forest, Sawtooth National Recreation Area and Sawtooth National Forest. What a nice road, 'Sawtooth Range' obviously gets it's name from somewhere. We also saw a tiny little ting which we learned later was a chipmunk! Right, the same species as in 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' and just as cute.
Next stop was Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. Apparently it totally looks like the moon's surface (never seen that one up close), but instead of craters formed by meteor impacts, these black craters and cones are the result of several volcanic eruptions an 13.000 years of lava flowing out through the cracks in the Earth's surface. Pretty cool, but it seemed that the main purpose of the park was to create awareness of the impact visitors have to nature preserves. Along one of the walks in the preserve, we heard a weird squeaking noise behind us which Kevin found out was a squirrel in a tree (which he felt very proud of), very hard to spot, as it's furry coat totally camouflaged it against the tree trunk.
Afterwards we drove a totally desolated road up to Idaho Falls. The road passed through INEEL (Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory), an area of more than 23,000 square km, established to develop nuclear reactors. It has the first reactor ever build (1951) on display, but the museum was closed – sad face.
