Yellowstone – Part II

On schedule for today was the South Rim. We saw some more elk, the Firehole Falls and Lower Geyser Basin. The latter contains half a dozen spectacular geysers that erupt frequently. We waited a long time, but only got to see the one that erupts continuously anyway. We did got to see a small one on the Firehole Lake Drive.

The next – important – stop was Midway Geyser Basin, where you can find Grand Prismatic Spring. We didn't get to see that much of the spring though, with all the steam coming off. That was a pity, but it was made up by a herd of bisons that were grazing really close by... Ann really wanted to see a herd crossing a road, blocking all traffic. We did not get that lucky, but we did see a single bison cross the road... Old Faithfull is one of the most famous geysers. It used to erupt very regularly, but early visits destroyed its system and now it's a bit less regular: approximately every 93 minutes. We had no idea about the timing, but were only 20 minutes early for the next 'show'. It was very impressive.

Further at Black Sand Basin, we did not get to see all the geyser and hot springs, because a heard of bisons was lying in the grass next to the boardwalk, and you don't want to get too close to such huge mammals! Lastly we visited West Thumb Geyser Basis, which is a thermal area on the rim of Yellowstone Lake. Some Geysers were like little volcanic islands sticking out of the water! So cute.

In the afternoon we drove through Grand Teton National Park. We wanted to see the famous view over Jenny's Lake, but it was so freaking cold up there that we just left and went home =)
