We were going to go back to Seattle for the weekend, and we wanted to visit North Cascades National Park on our way back, so we were on a tight schedule. Thursday we therefore mostly spent driving. We chose for a scenic route along Banks Lake, the Grand Coulee Dam, and through the Colville Indian Reservation.
On our way, we passed a tree fully draped with shoes... you know when you tie your laces together, you can throw them over a telephone wire or whatever... it's called shoe tossing and it's a weird American tradition. Apparently also – and probably especially – on the most desolate of places.
It's also nice to see how roads are built here. You want to build a road, and there is a mountain in the way. What to do, what to do? Build around it? Bridges? No, blow up the mountain, of course =)
Nightfall came quick after we passed Coulee Dam. So we didn't see much of the reservation. But we did manage to get to a town (called Brewster) right before North Cascades National Park: our goal for the next day.
