Vancouver whale watching

Our goal of the day: spotting Killer Whales (Orca's) in Vancouver (yes, that's Canada). Vancouver is a 2,5 hour drive from Seattle so we left early in the morning again (06h), expecting a traffic jam at the border with Canada, but there was none. On the other lane, coming from Canada, however, what a serious hold-up. Apparently many Canadians go shopping in the US. The consequence is that we were way to early (8h30 instead of 10h) in Vancouver. We could have slept another hour, however, better too early than too late, so we went for breakfast!

We took a whale watching boat that cruised the waters between Vancouver and the more Southern islands of Canada and the US. It was a long trip (130 miles and over 6 hours), but it was absolutely a blast! The first sign of life came from a few Dall's Porpoises (Bruinvissen) that were swimming and jumping out of the water around the boat. Next we found a female Humpback Whale and her child. We were enjoying their swimming, as the captain received the message that a family of over 20 Transient Killer Whales was spotted North of Vancouver. This is normally out of the range of the whale watching companies, however a family of 20 Killer Whales is not something real naturalists can ignore. So we went there as fast as we could and it was magnificent. It was indeed a large family with lots of young ones. They were swimming, jumping, playing, sticking their head out of the water to get a look of us... We spend a lot of time there, following them and watching them play. It was well worth the extra hours on the boat.
