On Sunday we took a scenic route that starts in La Grande, passes Wallowa Lake, passes the South rim of the Hells Canyon, and ends in Baker City. The Wallowa Lake has an important historical meaning: it is the starting point of the Nez Perce National Historic Trail, followed by hundreds of Indians in 1877 when they were running from U.S. army generals. The trail goes all the way to the North of Montana, where they had to surrender, 40 miles from the Canadian border.
Ann wanted to photograph the nice scenery along the way – a mixture of evergreen conifers, Golden Aspen and Subalpine Larch: a coniferous species turning yellow in the fall – but when she was standing next to the car, she heard a loud breathing sound coming from the bushes and got so freaking scared she jumped right back into the car. It probably was just an elk or a hog, but even those you don't want to get on your tail!
Hells Canyon National Recreation Area is only accessible with 4WD or on foot, so we could only see a small part of the South rim. But as in all national parks, monuments, etc., an impressive viewpoint was built here (appropriately named Hells Canyon Overlook).
